Jim Fargo, plant manager for the Centennial Ag Supply location in Kersey, CO, bowed his head in awe. His location had just been named the National winner of the Environmental Respect Awards for 2013, besting four other regional winners from across the U.S.

“I’m humbled to receive this honor,” said Fargo, accepting his crystal trophy in a ceremony at the Longworth Building in Washington, DC. “I would like to thank the employees at Centennial for making this possible, because without their efforts at environmental stewardship, this wouldn’t be happening.”

In an earlier interview, Fargo described all the ways in which Centennial Ag had improved its environmental stewardship in the past few years to improve its standing in the community. More than nine million gallons of liquid fertilizer is stored at the Kersey outlet, where a portable reactor is brought in when needed to make liquid solutions and suspensions. The facility also has a 20,000-square-foot dry warehouse that is surrounded by a concrete dike.

And as always, the employees of Centennial Ag help set the company’s environmental and safety agenda.

“We are in the people business,” said Fargo. “In our group meetings, any employee can offer thoughts on safety changes.”

This kind of input, he said, has led to adding safety cages and platforms for top-of-truck safety, steel walkways to bridge pipes and avoid potential falls and vehicle serving on different sides of the business to avoid the possibility of contamination. The sizable yard is also fenced for added security.

In conclusion, Fargo again pointed to the people at Centennial for keeping the company’s environmental stewardship programs on track.

“We are leaders in productivity and profitability for our customers,” he said. “But more importantly, we are dads, moms, sisters, brothers, best friends and neighbors. Our passion is helping you grow – not just for our customers, but for everyone.”

Now in its 23rd year, the Environmental Respect Awards program honors those ag retailers that have exceled at environmental stewardship as compared with their peers. The program is sponsored by DuPont Crop Protection in partnership with CropLife and Farm Chemicals International magazines.
