Syngenta, Plant Health Care Sign Herbicide Deal
Plant Health Care (PHC) and Syngenta Crop Protection have signed a non-exclusive agreement to develop and market a combined herbicide spray based on PHC’s Harpin protein and Syngenta’s glyphosate herbicide products, according to Proactive Investors.
In trials, Harpin has been shown to significantly increase yields on a variety of crops when applied in combination with other active ingredients including glyphosate and fungicides. Syngenta, after working with various Harpin formulations, will test multiple formulations of Harpin and glyphosate with the intention of offering new combined products as crop treatment options. According to PHC, the protein technology also suppresses pests like nematodes and protects against disease.
Financial terms of the agreement are confidential.
In Dec. 2008, PHC and Monsanto agreed to an exclusive, long-term development and commercialization deal for a Harpin-based seed treatment for corn, soybeans, cotton, canola, and some vegetables. Monsanto owns commercialization rights, while PHC receives milestone payments and ongoing royalties, under terms of the agreement.
PHC says the combined spray herbicide treatment will be suitable for all glyphosate-tolerant crops.
