Hooded Sprayers Help Minimize Spray Drift

Effectively managing spray drift has been a constant challenge for custom applicators for several years. Now, Willmar Fabrication, LLC, has a new product offering that the company believes will help in this cause.

The Willmar SPK645 self-propelled retrofit kits include Redball Gen II broadcast hoods, receiver brackets and hardware and are available for most makes and models of self-propelled sprayers. After initial installation, the hood assemblies can be put on or removed in five to 10 minutes, says the company.

According to Willmar Fabrica­tion, using hooded sprayers during ground applications has the potential to minimize pesticide drift, especially when combined with other drift reduction technologies, such as drift retardant adjuvants or low-drift nozzles. “Willmar hoods greatly improve the placement and thus, efficacy, of chemicals being applied, whether it’s insecticides, herbicides, fungicides or defoliants,” says the company.

Studies Conducted

To prove this point, Willmar Fabrication had a 2013 study performed on the Redball Gen II Broadcast Hoods by University of Nebraska-Lincoln researchers at the West Central Research Station and Extension Center. Three different spray tips were used on both the hooded sprayer and open-boom in the study. With all three spray tip types, the researchers achieved greater coverage when using them in conjunction with Redball Gen II Broadcast Hoods vs. an open-boom sprayer. In fact, according to the study results, Redball Gen II Broadcast Hoods offered up to 90% drift reduction in the first 4 meters downwind vs. open-boom sprayers.
