Laserplane Focuses On All Aspects Of Precision Farming

The Trimble Authorized Dealership has transformed its business from one focused primarily on lasers to a business focused on all aspects of precision farming. Owners Steve Nelson, Chris East and Ronnie Andrews have grown their business to 12 employees and continue to expand. The company aims to help educate farmers on the best practices that can help farms run efficiently, while increasing profits and helping to protect the environment. This dedicated team will often work between 15 and 17 hours a day, seven days a week during the busy farming season, and see themselves as farmers’ partners, not sales people. A key characteristic of all employees Laserplane hires is a desire to take care of the customer. Q1 Laserplane offers the full range of Trimble precision agriculture services, with dedicated employees focused on key precision ag areas such as autosteering and displays, variable rate flow and application control, data management and data-informed decision-making, and land leveling.

Q2 Laserplane is at the forefront of a new land leveling technique in agriculture designed to move less dirt (cause less land disturbance) when leveling a field for irrigation purposes. The new practice allows farmers to conduct minimal cuts and fills to allow row watering instead of leveling an entire field. The technique is more cost effective for the farmer because less dirt is removed, and the farmer can spend less money rebuilding the topsoil back to previous levels. Plus, it’s better for the environment since less topsoil is disturbed. As a result, the practice is allowing farmers to turn previously non-irrigated farmland into irrigated farmland at a reasonable price. Laserplane is one of the few precision ag dealers in the country that is implementing this practice. In the six to eight months since they’ve been implementing Row Water using Trimble’s FieldLevel II system, the company has seen 40 to 50 farms begin using it. Laserplane’s knowledge and expertise of the practice has even led to them being asked to be on a board associated with the National Conservation Office, which is working toward national approval and federal funding of the Row Water practice.

Q3 Laserplane is one of the first Trimble-certified GPS and laser in-house service and repair centers in the United States. With employees specifically staffed for this center, they can do in-house repairs to any GPS units, rather than have to send them elsewhere for repair. Chris East was a former field engineer with Trimble and conducted trainings while at the company. In his current role with Laserplane, he has continued this practice and now trains Laserplane employees on Trimble precision ag products so they, in turn, can train the region’s farmers.
