What They Needed
“We had three smaller buildings all within 10 miles of each other,” explains Rick Dunbar, general manager at Edon Farmers Co-op. “With the cost of repair to the old facilities, the cost of operating three separate locations and the option of rail receiving for the new building — the decision to build a new facility was an easy one. We toured a Marcus building, and others, but ultimately went with Marcus because of their quality construction, attention to detail and level of service.
“The new building has exceeded our expectations — making us much more efficient and able to provide better service to our customers,” he added. “The additional storage space also allows us more flexibility to take advantage of market conditions and minimize our dependence on in-season delivery.”
What We Designed
“Art Herman, agronomy manager with Edon reached out to us very early in their process,” describes Bill Strack, Marcus Construction, business development. “Edon had done their homework and were pretty confident in the product mix they wanted and total tonnage (building size). One of the bigger obstacles they faced was where to put the building. We worked closely with Art on site criteria and provided numerous preliminary layouts at different locations. Once the best location was determined, we continued to refine the design by looking at various building orientations to best accommodate the rail, truck flow and traffic, and to plan for future expansion.”
